remixredux09 is live! 235 stories in 65 (or so) fandoms.

Some fabulous person remixed my story Think of Atlantis into Cantando More (The Ode to Sheppard’s Cock Remix), which is hilarious and alarming and awesome in the very best SGA way.

Of course, one of the 235 stories in the archive was written by me. Feel free to guess which one it was, though I won't confirm nor deny until a week from today when author names are revealed. :-)

There's a great conversation about alternatives to imeem here at the journal of the lovely sockkpuppett, and based on what I've seen there, I'm going to upload my vids both to BAM Vid Vault and to Blip.tv.

Although I've heard some qualms about ning.com, the network of which BAM is a part, the moment I joined BAM I got a lovely email from them welcoming me specifically as a vidder, which feels nice. And on the Blip front, I really like their Fair Use policy (http://blog.blip.tv/blog/2006/06/22/copyright-and-fair-use-policy/) which says, in part:

An exception to this rule is if the work as a whole is transformative. Transformative means making something substantially new created from the copyrighted work... Your addition to the copyrighted work must have some value. You have to say something. It can be commentary, parody, art or something altogether different as long as you can justifiably claim that you said something with the work as a whole.

Transformative work FTW!

Anyway, I am stashing my vids at both places for now: Kass at blip.tv, Kass at BAM Vid Vault. (ETA: vids are now mirrored in both places, and the embedded versions on dw/lj should work again.) The vids will also always be available for download from my website. Herein endeth the PSA.

Per this post at vidding, I learn that imeem is going to take down all user-generated video as of June 30. Whoops. Guess I won't be hosting my vids for streaming there anymore. (FWIW, my vids -- all three of them to date -- are available for download here at trickster.) Guess I'll have to keep an eye out and see where people start stashing vids for streaming now...

I meant to post about this last week but got derailed by RL: the OTW has announced The Fan Culture Preservation Project, a partnership with the Special Collections Department at the University of Iowa. Iowa is home to a huge collection of SF/F zines and APA zines, as well as Riot Grrl and Underground Music Zines (more than 250,000 in total.) The OTW just brokered the donation of Ming Wathne's Fanzine Archive, a collection of more than 3,000 classic (media fannish) zines, and if you've got zines you want to preserve but no longer have space for, the FCPP would be happy to take them off your hands!

I have an excellent prompt for mcshep_match! No ideas yet but the story isn't due until late August, so I think I'm okay there. :-)

I didn't know minotaurs well, but I'm still shocked and saddened by the news of his passing. I attended his Sex Tips for Slash Writers panel at Escapade back in... 2002, I think? And I know he was a dear friend to many of my dear friends. Fandom is poorer without him.

Since news of his death hit fandom last night, a Minotaur Fanlore page has been established -- go and read, and remember, and add whatever you can add.

Yesterday I joined Facebook by accident.

Everyone I know was talking about the Great Facebook Land Grab. Apparently this weekend it became possible to claim usernames, so one's address could be facebook.com/username, and I heard so much about it that I started to wonder whether it really was a big deal. So I asked around, and a few people said, yeah, you might want a FB account under your chosen username, even if you don't use it now. Otherwise someone else might take it.

So I joined. Only to discover that new users can't get usernames... and that half a dozen people had already friended me before I had the chance to delete the damn account. So I figured, okay, fine, I'll give it a shot. I spent a while browsing. I added a bunch of "friends."

It's been about 24 hours, and OMG, I hate it. ( I feel like an alien! )

Last year my Remix experience was so incredibly awesome (I got to remix a story by seperis!) that I was a little bit worried that this year I wouldn't have quite as much fun.

OMG, the Remix mods have totally smiled on me -- I am DYING WITH GLEE. Again. Thank you, Remix!

In unrelated news, last night I watched as the Team Peace roster filled up (apparently we filled both teams faster than last year!) and that fills me with glee, too. Thank you to everyone who signed up for McShep Match this year -- I am so jazzed about this!

It's a happy time to be an SGA fan.

When sheafrotherdon planted the seed (er, so to speak) which turned into my crack ficlet Zygote, I was picturing John and Rodney as, you know, actual sperm and egg. (What? This is SGA! I can think of five weirder crack!fic AUs without breaking a sweat.)

But lomedet noted that she read the piece as a fusion with Woody Allen's Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Sex* But Were Afraid to Ask -- and next thing I knew, ratcreature had created this awesome piece of chibi art featuring John in a Woody Allen-style sperm costume:
